Wayne PusilloHere’s a picture of me and my trophy 6 X 6 bull elk that I harvested during a late October hunt in Utah. The bull scores 353. But what sets it apart as a real trophy is the near perfect symmetry of both sides!
The weather was unusually warm for late October, and the bulls weren’t very active, which required us to cover much ground in Utah’s beautiful and rugged hills. We spotted him late one evening and decided to return to the same spot at first light. But he had other plans that morning. We finally caught up with him in the late afternoon of the third day and I connected with one shot of my trusty Sako 338 Winchester magnum that I had equipped with a fine Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44 scope from the good folks at SWFA!
The bull took a few steps and collapsed, and the trophy was mine! My 230 grain Winchester Failsafe bullet had done it’s job beautifully at a distance of 135 yards.
This is the third, and finest, bull that I have taken with my Sako, and the first with my Zeiss/Sako combination. This scope performed flawlessly throughout the hunt, including some pretty rough handling through miles of rough terrain and brush. I especially appreciated the brightness and sight picture clarity right up to the edges of the lenses. Zeiss has a real winner in this Conquest line, and at a very attractive cost.
Now I have to wait until May to be reunited with my trophy. But the memories of the hunt will be with me for a lifetime. It pays to bring the finest equipment into the field, and my Zeiss/Sako combination were top performers during my hunt!
Now I can start planning my next hunt…………before my wife finds out!
