Jimmy & Jeffrey JeansonneChris,
My name is Jimmy Jeansonne. My son (Jeffrey - 15 years old) and I took a recent Safari (July 1-10, 2005) to Namibia in the Steinhausen area with Boet Nel Safaris where we used the following optics during the hunt that were purchased from SWFA: 4.5-14x42 Burris Fullfield II with Ballistic Plex reticle, Bushnell 800 Laser Rangefinder and Steiner Military Marine 8x30 binoculars.
All animals were free ranging and taken in the spot and stalk fair chase method.
One interesting point to note about Jeffrey (now I am bragging a little)is that he is a member of the 2004 NRA YHEC (Youth Hunters Education Challenge) National Championship Team - Junior Division shooting with the Desoto Youth Sportsmans Team from Mansfield, LA. It is composed of 5 youths per team and his team won the competition in (believe it or not) Mansfield, PA in July 2004.
Of the 4 pictures presented, I harvested one animal (Hartebeast) and Jeffrey harvested the other 3 (Oryx, Kudu, Warthog). The rifle we used was a Tikka .7mm Rem Magnum (Burris 4.5 x 14) hand loaded with 175 gr. Speer Grand Slam bullets. All animals were taken with one shot.
Jeffrey took the Oryx with a 120 yard shot after a 200 yard stalk. The animal ran a short 30 yards before falling. The Oryx Bull had very symmetrical 31" horns and was scored as a Silver Medal Trophy.
The Kudu was by far the hardest animal to take. He was spotted coming into a water hole with 8 cow Kudu's before moving off about 100 yards into the thick brush. We made a stalk of about 300 yards, lasting almost 1 hour. The last 100 yards of the stalk was on hands and knees. We finally got within 80 yards of the bull. We could see the horns sticking above the brush but not the body, and with all of the Kudu cows around the bull we could not move in closer for fear of spooking them. So we exercised extreme patience in waiting for the bull to step clear of the brush. After an agonizing 30 minute wait, the bull stepped out for a clear shot and was dropped in his tracks. The bull was a very nice mature trophy with symmetrical 50" horns.
The Warthog was shot coming into a waterhole during mid-day hours. He was shot at a range of 100 yards and dropped in his tracks. The Warthog was scored as a Silver Medal Trophy with 9" tusks.
The Hartebeast was spotted in a large herd at a distance of 600 yards. We stalked to within 200 yards, the last 100 yards on our hands and knees. I made the shot using the Ballistic Plex second bar strada and the Hartebeast ran 50 yards before falling. He was an excellent mature bull and was scored as a Gold Medal trophy.
We took several more animals on the safari and made several 200 yard plus shots which were made easy by the use of the Ballistic Plex reticile.
Thanks for your consideration, Jimmy Jeansonne
