Lance TjadenI can't begin to tell you how hard it is to spot mule deer bucks in the spotted snow canyons of Wyoming. If you are not using quality optics I guarantee you are missing 75% of the big bucks. My Leupold 10x42 Gold Ring binoculars and 12-40x60 High Definition Gold Ring spotter were worth there weight in gold on this hunt!
I spotted this buck bedded down behind some sage brush on the side of what us Texans would call a mountain. We were forming the game plan when some does must have winded us, causing the bedded buck to get up and trot off behind them. We stayed put for a good thirty minutes then started our pursuit but could only get within 250 yards because of the terrain. Fortunately for me there was an 8 foot sheep herders "rock tower" between him and me that allowed me to close the distance a little more and provide the perfect rest (you can see it in the background). While I was prepared and had planned for longer shots this was a mere chip shot for my VX-III 4.5-14 Boone & Crockett.
