Doc Grieb

1300 November 19, 2005. It was the last hours of the last day of the second season here in Washington State. I had all but given up on finding a shooter buck for this year and was on my way back home from a morning and early afternoon of hunting down south. When I passed a road that I remembered that I went down in the first season and only seeing some does. I thought to myself, what the heck, its the middle of the Rut for these whitetails and they get crazy this time of year.

As I get to my destination I park my truck and get out. I walk around to the front and look up on the hill to my east and there were some deer. I got back into my truck and pulled out my Zeiss 10X field glasses and looked at them. There was on shooter Buck with about 10 does. I could not believe my luck. Wind in my favor, the setting sun to my back and a shooter buck some 600 yards to my east. I had to hurry as last shooting light was fast approaching. I circled around to my left (Northeast) and went over the ridge and hurried my way towards them. I got to within 200 yards and set myself down to ready my shot. Just like last year with my big Oregon Bull Elk, I pulled out my Stoney Point Genuine Pole Cat bipod and adjusted it for my shot. I pulled up my rifle, a Model 70 Winchester .300 Magnum, and placed it on the Pole Cat. I adjusted my scope, a Zeiss 4.5-14x44 Conquest, to 4.5 power and adjusted the parallax to crystal clarity. I sat there for several minutes when all of a sudden two of the does came running straight at me with the shooter buck nose down and hot on their trail. As they closed the distance I had to adjust my position. When the doe's got to within 100 feet of me they turned to their left (my right) and ran off. The Buck a nice 5 X 6 whitetail, being in Rut and Stupid, did not see me until he was 50 feet from me. He slammed on his binders and came to a sliding stop, it was too late for him as I had him in my crosshairs and dropped in his tracks. My 2005 Whitetail Season comes to a close with a fine Washington 5 X 6 Whitetail Buck, the last hours of the last day of the second season

I enjoy the hunt and the products that SWFA sell are the very best, I recommend them to everyone I know.
