Duane HerbortDouble Shot!
This one took two shots. Not that I couldn’t hit the target, but because of the fence wire between my target and me.
Sometimes you get a little over confident when you have a Zeiss Conquest.3-9x40 MC. You want to dot the eyes. That’s what I was thinking when I took aim. This guy was on the other side of a fence and I thought this was not a problem. No, the other side of the fence was my property also. After taking careful aim and squeezing down, BAM all I saw was tail lights! Then realizing there was a distinctive PING. So I went to where he was standing and saw the panel wire had a nice bullet hole through it. Nice shot eh! What a let down. Later I had to go eat crow, my father in law had taken a nice heavy eight pointer that afternoon.
So I returned a week later to the same spot (no father in law, sorry Virgil). Waiting anxiously, I had seen several other nice bucks come in, but not this one. I never thought he would return after that experience. Then, finally he re-appeared. Same spot again, on the other side of the fence! Not this time, I waited and waited until he jumped the fence. My new Remington 700 VS SF II – 223 did the trick. One shot though the neck. And people think it’s for Prairie Dogs, not if you dot the eyes. Oh, the other fence was between me and him this time. I held the Z-Plex between the wires and waited for the perfect timing for the target to be in that sweet spot. No confidence lost with a Zeiss!
After looking to see where the bullet had hit, I was confused at the fresh skin scars on his neck. I thought WOW I didn’t think the 223 could do this. Then I saw where this shot went in. The scars were the results of the shrapnel caused by that wire earlier.
He’s sausage, salami and jerky now, or was! All’s good when you have quality optics from SWFA.
Thanks Shawn, Chris and Brady.
